Our family recently embarked on a three-day road trip from Plano, Texas, to Broken Bow, Oklahoma, with our 4-year-old and 3-month-old in tow. The journey took approximately three hours, with a brief lunch stop in Paris, Texas. While the route offers limited stopping options, Paris provided a convenient break.

Accommodation: Cozy Cabin Retreat
We stayed in a newly built cabin that exceeded our expectations. The resort featured amenities such as a swimming pool (which we didn’t utilize due to cooler weather), a fishing pond, and a bowling alley. Our cabin was equipped with a private fire pit and jacuzzi, adding to the comfort and relaxation of our stay.
Day 1: Arrival and Evening Activities
Upon arrival, we spent the evening engaging in various activities:
- Fishing: The on-site pond provided a serene setting for our 4-year-old to experience fishing for the first time.
- Bowling: The resort’s bowling alley offered family-friendly fun, accommodating all ages.
- Barbecue: We concluded the day with a delightful barbecue by the fire pit, creating a cozy and memorable family dinner.

Day 2: Exploring Beavers Bend State Park
Our second day was dedicated to exploring the natural beauty of Beavers Bend State Park.
- Forest Heritage Center Museum: We began with a visit to this museum, which provided insightful exhibits about the area’s history and forestry.
- Trail Ride: A highlight of our trip, the trail ride took us through the park’s lush forest. We spotted deer and encountered horseback riders along the way. At one point, the horse leaders approached our train window, allowing the children to pet the horses—a thrilling experience for our 4-year-old. The horse ride lasts approximately 40 minutes, and pony rides were available for younger children.
- Picnic Lunch: Given the limited dining options within the park, we packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed it at one of the many scenic picnic areas.
- Kayaking: In the afternoon, we embarked on a kayaking adventure. The tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings made for an unforgettable experience.
Note: During our visit, there was a significant amount of pollen in the air, giving it a yellowish hue. Those with allergies should take necessary precautions.

Day 3: Beavers Bend Safari Park
Before departing, we visited the Beavers Bend Safari Park:
- Drive-Through Tour: The hour-long tour allowed us to observe a variety of animals, including deer, zebras, buffalo, reindeer, llamas, and ostriches. The animals appeared well-maintained, and the staff was friendly and informative.
- Walking Zoo: Although under construction during our visit, the walking zoo typically offers an additional 30-minute experience.
- On-Site Café: The café provided a convenient spot for refreshments before our journey home.

Final Thoughts
Despite initial concerns about activity limitations due to our children’s ages, the trip surpassed our expectations. Broken Bow offers a variety of family-friendly activities that cater to all age groups. Its proximity to Dallas makes it an ideal destination for a quick and fulfilling getaway.
